You may have heard this somewhere before. Studies have shown that sitting for prolonged periods of time can negatively affect your health and cause cardiovascular disease. But what can you do? You sit in front of your computer during office hours, in front of the tv after hours, and in your car, stuck in traffic in between.

So, how do you change it?

Any healthy habit or change starts with a small step in the right direction. You don’t have to start training for a half marathon. We’re all different, and how we move is a personal preference. By simply getting up more often and taking more steps, you can already create a much healthier version of yourself.

Here are some practical ways in which you can incorporate movement into your daily life.

Take the stairs

The lift or escalator is much easier than the stairs, we know. But it doesn’t get your heart pumping or give you that sense of achievement when you reach the top. You made it!

Get up regularly

Deadlines (and your boss) are calling, understandable. However, getting up regularly and moving is good for your health and might just get you out of that rut that you’ve been stuck in for hours.

Take a walk around the block

Being outside and breathing some fresh air with the birds chirping in the background does wonders for your mental and physical wellbeing. You can let go of the stress of the day and get in a few extra steps.

Play with the kids or the dog

Play. It’s a simple thing that we often push aside when we grow up. But this is your call to have some fun, run around, and laugh out loud – it’ll refresh your body and soul.

Find your moves and stick to it

Find out what activities you like and do those regularly. Whether you’re into biking, yoga or ultimate frisbee, the more often you do the healthy thing, the more it will benefit you and become a habit.
