Whether you’re running, walking or skipping rope, exercising in hot weather can be particularly challenging. Since we’re entering the summer months, heatwaves are likely to be a regular occurrence. But that doesn’t have to stop your fitness regime. Here’s how you can exercise safely in hot weather conditions.

1. Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate

It’s essential to stay hydrated, especially when it’s hot outside. Dehydration can lead to heat-related illnesses like heat exhaustion, fainting and lethargy.

2. Dress for the weather

Loose-fitting, breathable clothes help sweat to evaporate quickly so that you can cool off. Remember to wear a hat and sunscreen if you will be exercising outside.

3. Pay attention to the warning signs of heat exhaustion

  • Weakness
  • Fatigue
  • Dizziness or lightheadedness
  • Blurry vision
  • Confusion

4. Be flexible

Try to exercise earlier in the day or in the early evening when it’s cooler outside. Another good idea is to plan your workouts ahead of time so that you can plan a different activity like exercising indoors at the gym if it’s too hot outside.

5. Know when to stop

If you notice that you are not feeling well, even if your symptoms are not specifically related to heat exhaustion, take a break or stop the workout for that day.
